Guidelines for Successful
Exterior Flatwork
Follow these recommendations to greatly reduce scaling

Scaling is Reduced when...
Scaling is Increased when...

  • Concrete is placed at lower slump, or water reducing admixtures are used to increase workability
  • Evaporation retarders are utilized Confilm, Eucabar, etc.
  • All bleed water has evaporated prior to any finishing, this is critical!!!
  • The slab is finished with minimal floating
  • The surface is strick off, bull floated and broomed
  • Curling/Sealing compounds are applied immediately following initial set and final finishing pass
  • Surface is protected from extreme weather conditions (rain, freezing, low humidity, +/- adequate temperatures)

  • Water / cement ratio is increased. Water is added to increase slump
  • Spraying or blessing of surface with a hose or brush
  • Bleed water is finished into surface of slab. This weakens the surface.
  • The surface is overworked causing the removal of air entrainment
  • Power trowels, steel trowels, blue gliders are used
  • Slab is improperly cured
  • Weather conditions are not accounted for
Deicing salts, fertilizers, etc. may be hazardous to concrete surface especially during the first winter.
